“Mr. Akishiro Ng, son of coach Ng, I, Claudette Yeap, captain of the girls’ basketball team hereby ‘hire’ you as our substitute coach. Ready, Team greet.”

“Good Evening Coach Ng Junior.” The team chorused.

Chapter 4: Do Cats Fly?

Shocked, Akishiro stood there, his jaws on the ground; his eyes were barely any bigger than a bloated fish ball. He blinked for a while as though the information was too vast and complicated for his superior brain to process.

“Wait. Hold on for a second…” Akishiro mumbled.

“No way! I can’t coach you! I do not even have the qualification to teach a kindergarten kid how to play UNO!” Akishiro tried his utmost best to explain his case to the laughing crowd.

“Okay then! It is decided! Mr. Akishiro shall be our coach until coach Ng returns back with his head clearer then. Team dis-“ Claudette grinned and was about to dismiss the team when she was suddenly interrupted by Akishiro yells of protest.

“WAIT! You know what girls? I can’t coach you people. I don’t have the qualifications okay. Find somebody else, like your captain or something.” Akishiro explained to them patiently as he saw Claudette’s face darken.

“Well… our captain isn’t here.” Anna confessed.

“She’s currently missing… please Akishiro… do it for us would you?” Biella pleaded and the whole team too followed in suit and pleaded with him but Akishiro stood firm upon his decision. Then, he felt a gentle tug on his sleeve. Akishiro turned and saw Germaine standing behind him, her eyes big and round

“Please Akishiro.” Germaine pleaded. Akishiro then gave out an exasperated sigh before finally consenting, much to the team’s delight.

“Let’s go eat hotpot to celebrate!” Biella suggested and the others fist shot up as a sign of agreement. But Germaine meekly excused herself with the excuse that her parents were waiting for her. Without waiting for the teams reply, she turned and left the narrow hallway. Suddenly, she heard footsteps chasing after her.

“Look…” Germaine sighed as she turned and was shocked to see Akishiro panting.

“Let me send you home. It’s getting pretty late.” Akishiro convinced Germaine. Germaine finally consented and together they headed towards the transparent automatic door. Through out the journey, an air of silence rode along. Neither Akishiro nor Germaine spook a word. After a twenty minutes walk, they both reached a black metal gate. Behind was a big mansion that looked scarlet red in the dim light. Akishiro stood, hands in his pocket, as he saw Germaine open the gate and enter. Germaine turned and looked at Akishiro. A forced smile cracked on Akishiro expressionless face. Germaine nodded and walked through the curved pathway which led to the front porch which was dimly lit by a bell shape lamp. Germaine turned and took a last glance at Akishiro before entering the dark house. Seeing that Germaine was already in the house, Akishiro stifled a sigh before turning and retreat in the dim alleyway. Suddenly, he heard somebody yell his name. He turned and saw Germaine still in the school uniform. Her hair floating in the presence of the light spring breeze.

“Thank you” Germaine thanked. Akishiro smiled and turned to continue the journey home.

“Really Akishiro! Thank you so very much!” Germaine yelled making Akishiro stop in his tracks. He turned his head slightly. Germaine thought she saw Akishiro smile for a brief instant before he turned and continued walking whilst waving his left hand dismissingly. Germaine smiled and turned to head back the house.

Inside Akishiro heart, sweetness was growing.

Germaine pushed open the front door which led to a house where darkness envelopes the whole place.

“I’m home.” She sighed as she switched on the lights to see the house totally empty – if you do not count the furniture. As though as she was used to the void surrounding, she skimmed through the beautifully made furniture and went to her room. When she arrived at her room which was well furnished with grand furniture, Germaine then changed out of her school uniform and into an oversized purple tee shirt and a pair of black bloomers. From her navy blue school bag, she fished out her icy-blue flip phone and white purse and stuffed them into a white leather mini sling bag. Which she there after clumsily clobbered down the stairs bare footed. She then slipped into her black slippers and was reaching out for the main door handle when she heard somebody call. She turned and saw a lean looking lady wearing a silk robe, her curly brown hair resting on her shoulders.

“What is it?” Germaine asked rudely.

“Germaine! Is this how you treat your mother?!” the brunette exclaimed with fury,

“Mother?” Germaine laughed cruelly

“You are no mother. No mother would give up their child for their work.” Germaine spat venomously. Then, silence tried to calm the rising tension.

“Germaine, I know I’m not a good mother, and I have made a lot of mistakes. But nobody is perfect. But I’m trying… Happy Birthday” Germaine’s mother explained but suddenly, her phone rang. After talking for awhile, she finally hang up. But before she could have a chance to explain, Germaine was already at the door wooden frame.

“Did you remember, or did you just did not have any work today?” Germaine asked menacingly before slamming the door behind her.

Germaine sighed as she walked down the well lighted concrete pathways with waist height brick wall running down the sides of the pathway. She walked and walked down the never ending path and suddenly came face-to-face with a basketball court. Her baby blue orbs swept through the court to realize that she has arrived to the court where she arrived a few days ago. Her heart dropped tot the dark abyss when she realized that there were no stray basketball around the area for her to improve on her skills. Depressed, Germaine sat on the sidelines and stared at the serene town’s nightline as the trees swayed to the melodic rhythm of the refreshing spring breeze. Suddenly, a light blue plastic bag obstructed the way of Germaine’s sight. Germaine turned and saw the beautiful looking stranger who helped her with the theory part of the follow-through

“Mind astounding me with your reason upon being here?” The navy blue hair stranger asked as clearly as she could possibly could with a bun in her mouth. Germaine as though she did not hear the question continued staring intensely at her. The lass stood there puzzled upon what she was looking at.

“Look there’s a flying cat!” Germaine suddenly exclaimed as she pointed pass the stranger’s shoulder. Without a thought, the stranger looked in the direction of where Germaine was pointing at. Without any hesitation or whatsoever, Germaine swiped the orange spherical shape object from the stranger’s palm and dribbled it to the free throw line where she paused to analyse her position. Filled with confidence, Germaine raised her hand up ready to shoot. However, before Germaine could even let the ball go, the ball was smacked away which the ball was beautifully caught by the stranger.

“Cats don’t fly” the stranger laughed intelligently. Germaine growled before composing herself.

“True, but that one really flies.” Germaine smiled as she indicated by pointing her index finger at it. The stranger turned around and Germaine dove towards the ball but before she could even reach the ball, the stranger has already disappeared. Within a heartbeat, the stranger was passed her and dribbling towards the hoop. Three steps after entering the semi circle and she sent the ball through the hoop.

“Cats don’t fly.” The stranger stuck out her tongue. Laughing, Germaine charged towards the stranger and struggled for the possession. Even without Germaine realizing it, a smile has finally spread across her once monotonous face making the stranger finally smile.

“You know, basketball is a sport where people from every walks of life come together and have fun. Therefore if you are not smiling while playing, its meaningless.” The stranger smiled as she placed her hand on Germaine’s shoulder.

“Even if it means your parents missing your birthday?” Germaine asked sadly.

“Your love and passion for something will overrule all pain.” The stranger encouraged.

“Understood!” Germaine nodded, a true sweet smile blooming across her face.
